Hello San Diego!

We are thrilled about the upcoming (Saturday) Imarhan show at the Quartyard. Imarhan are part of the "new wave of Tuareg music," which blends "Desert Blues" with funk and rock. Several members of the Worldview Project and The Center for World Music will be in attendance! Tickets are very reasonable, so expand your music horizons and join us to check out this this genre-bending band from Algeria! Also, the Center for World Music has once again teamed up with the Mingei to present the Anthony Stanley Duo: Hawaiian Music on the Commons show tonight (and it's free!).

All this weekend, Billie! Backstage with Lady Day will be performed at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre in Oceanside. The Shakespeare Festival will continue at Southwestern College (it ends on August 5th). TINA - The Tina Turner Musical will continue at the San Diego Civic Theatre

Friday (today), at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, you can enjoy Havana Nights featuring Latin/Cuban band Fercho. The Hawaiian/Polynesian music Anthony Stanley Duo will perform an acoustic show at the Mingei. The Digital Gym will screen the David Bowie biography Moonage Daydream. Latin Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Aleks Syntek and hometown Latin singer Fehr Rivas will perform at the House of Blues. Mamma Mia! will screen atop the parking structure at the Manchester Hyatt. At the Sparks Gallery, an opening for the new Illustrating Spain exhibit will happen.

Saturday, there will be an Indigo Dyeing Shibori Workshop at the San Diego Craft Collective. The Buddhist Temple of San Diego will hold their annual Bon Odori Festival. The San Diego International Children's Film Festival will be held at the Central Library. At Centro Cultural de la Raza, there will be a Reception for the opening game of the Ancestral Mesoamerican Ballgame. The House of Mexico will host a Summer Fiesta. At the First UU Church, there will be a Summer Tardeada Dance & Mariachi Performance. Tuareg group Imarhan will perform at The Quartyard (we will be there!). The Hot Club de Clermont will perform at Vinya: vino + vinyasa. Filipino singer and songwriter Arthur Nery will perform at Four Points by Sheraton. At Corazon Del Barrio, you can enjoy a Night of Live Cumbias. The Digital Gym will screen Gone with the Pope.

Sunday, the Schools of Flamenco Series #2 will be held at Normal Heights Community Dev with Flamenco demonstrations and a chance to try some steps. At the Bonita-Sunnyside Branch Library, there will be a Conversational Filipino Workshop. At the Grand Hyatt, a film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (the 1996 modernized version) will be screened. Mariachi Los Camperos and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra will perform together at the Rady Shell. The Mexican musical duo Los Gemelos de Sinaloa will perform at the House of Blues.

Monday, the 2009 winner of the Cannes Prix du Jury Thirst will screen at the Digital Gym.

Wednesday and Thursday, Oscar-winner Hayao Miyazaki's film Kiki's Delivery Service will be shown at the Angelika Film Center.

Wednesday, Warwick's will host Aimie K. Runyan as she discusses her new book, A Bakery in Paris. The Coronado Public Library will screen the film Passage to Buddha. "The Hendrix of the Sahara”, Vieux Farka Touré will perform at Music Box.

Next Thursday, there will be a closing reception at the Chinese Historical Museum for the Maestro Jahja Ling Exhibit. A trio of films The Border, Las Señales Ya No Están en el Cielo, and Ella Se Queda will be screened at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. Comedian Ramy Youssef will perform his stand-up act at the Observatory in North Park. Warwick's will host Alberto Mansur as he discusses and signs his new book, Only the Dead Know Peace. Guadalajaran band Porter will perform at Music Box. At Camino Riviera, the Afro-Bashment Festival will feature multiple DJs.

Next Friday and Saturday, Popular Mexican group Eslabón Armado will perform at the Civic Theatre.

Next Friday, the Latin American Festival & Mata Ortiz Pottery Market at Bazaar del Mundo will take place. Multilingual jazz singer Veronique Fourget will perform at Golden Island. Latin singer-songwriter Natalia Jiménez will perform at Balboa Theatre.

Next Saturday and Sunday, Artwalk
@ Liberty Station
will happen. The Heiva Tahitian Cultural Festival will take place at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater.

Next Saturday, the San Diego Soul Food Fest will take place at Tierra Central on University Avenue. The Italian film Siccità (Dry) will be screened at the Firehouse Museum in Little Italy. Burkina Faso musician Adama Bilorou makes his American debut at Dizzy's on Morena Blvd. There will be a Salsa & Bachata Party at Tango del Rey.

Next Sunday, the House of Italy will host their annual Lawn Program. At the Mingei, there will be a talk by storyteller Alyce Smith Cooper on the tapestry of African village life. At Torrey Pines High School, Meenal's Academy of Performing Arts and Kalāpi San Diego proudly present Nritya Samvaad - an Evening of Indian Dance. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Ziggy Marley will perform at the Rady Shell. At Mic Drop Comedy, you celebrate San Diego's Asian-American culture with an Asian Model Majority Comedy Show.

Local theatrical productions include Cabaret: the Musical at the Ocean Beach Playhouse and Billie! Backstage with Lady Day at Sunshine Brooks Theatre in Oceanside.

CD of the Month

Our International Music CD for the Month selection is Diario Mali by Ludovico Einaudi & Ballake Sissoko. Diario Mali is a collaboration album between Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi on piano and Malian musician Ballaké Sissoko on kora. It was released in Europe in 2003 and was a critical and commercial success. The album was recorded in Mali and Italy, and it features a blend of traditional Malian music with Einaudi's signature style of minimalist piano.

Book of the Month

This month's Book of the Month recommendation is Banyan Moon by Thao Thai . Banyan Moon is a novel about three generations of Vietnamese American women who are connected by the Banyan House, a crumbling old mansion in Florida that has been in the family for generations. The story is told from the alternating perspectives of Minh, Huong, and Ann Tran, who are all struggling to come to terms with the death of their matriarch, Minh.
